Read info on proper shifting and what not at sites like this:

To practice, try going to a car dealership. A used car dealership would have easier (worn in) clutches so engagement is more forgiving.

Act interested in a buying a car and let them know you are interested in a stick shift but you don't know how to drive one yet (this is common...since I was one). A good salesman will put you behind the wheel and let you learn. The hardest part about stick is taking off from a stop, so just practice that. Go around dealerships doing that and hopefully you'll have learned basic stick shifting before they post pictures of you at the dealerships.

When it comes down to it though, just go out and buy a stick shift. I didn't know how to drive stick before my first manual car and after a week of sweating through it, I got it down in a month. I was comfortable going to motor sport events about 6-8 months of driving. good luck

After observing very carefully your friends/family members driving their cars with stick shifts, go to a car dealer and ask to take a car with a manual ****** on a test drive. You could also get a part-time job shuttling cars for awhile, and they'd HAVE to train you on stick shifts AND you'd get paid for it!! That's how I personally learned and got the lust in my blood for the ultimate control and power of a stick. Hope this helped!! Vrrrrrooooommmmmmmmm!

You will learn how to drive stick quickly if it's your only mode of transportation. It isn't hard.
