Is it better to learn to drive in a smaller car?

learn to drive
Shannon! asked:

I’m going to get my temps this Thursday and I think that a small car versus a truck is that big of a deal when you are learning to drive. My mother seems to think that driving in a smaller car is better than driving in her Chevy Trailblazer, but I don’ think that’s true for everyone because I haven’t technically driven anything yet, so how would I know the difference? A car is a car is a car and a Trailblazer isn’t even really that big of a truck, it’s not like a Tahoe or something. So I really don’t see why I can’t drive her little SUV instead of someone else’s little car. Esspecially when someone I know is willing to teach me without me having to kiss up to them.

You would be better off learning to drive a stickshift.

Learn to drive in the kind of car that you will drive after you get a license. If you drive the Trailblazer, then it will be hard to transitin to a smaller car, or vice versa. Good luck!

First off, a TrailBlazer isn’t little. It’s a midsize. The last generation Blazer was little.

Second of all, no teenager should be driving a truck-based SUV. They aren’t as safe as a comparably sized midsize sedan such as a Chevy Malibu or Honda Accord.

I learned to drive on a smaller car, (a Honda Civic) and it was easier because parking was easier, and it was easier to control. Transitioning into driving the family minivan and other cars wasn’t as hard either, because I learned the basics on a car that was easy to learn with.

I would learn on a smaller car, and then later, if you wish, I would transition into a bigger car. But I would not drive a truck based SUV as a teenager.

When you take your test and you have to park, surely it’s going to be a lot easier with a smaller car???

I’d personally learn on a smaller car WITH a stickshift (like someone else said) you can go from stick to auto easily but the other way round is much harder – You have an extra pedal!

Road positioning’s going to be much harder to judge on a bigger truck too. If you muck up in a small car, you muck up on a small scale, if you muck up in a truck, you muck up on a whole bigger scale.
A Chevy Trailblazer isn’t a small SUV.

Shannon—Look little girl… I am not gona take your side. My kids did not get a license until they were 18 got it them selves. They also bought their own car. Don’t be such a winey little bratt. You are 16 your parents don’t have to let you get a licenses (temp). Did you get All “A”s last year????You have not passed the temp test yet. You said it yourself—never driven a car—how would you know what is best for a first time driver is suspose to learn. If Your Mom doesn’t drop you off at drivings school—she is out of her mind. She does not know how to teach driving. Mom does NOT want you to drive her SUV cause you will destroy the car. I would make you buy your own car. Settles what you will be able to drive. MOM no Co-sign–gets it on her own car.. Kissing **** has got nothing to do with going to the hospital cause you Wrecked. It hurts–could hurt the rest of your life..

DARE YOU TO SHOW THIS TO YOUR MOM
OR ARE YOU CHICKEN..

WHAT DOES DAD HAVE TO SAY???? NEVER MENTIONED DAD

Gerald, how about you lay off! I’m not 16, I’m 15 first off. and is picking on teenage kids how you get you kicks? If so you are more pathetic than I thought. Just because you didn’t trust your children enough to get their license at 16 doesn’t mean a damn thing. And don’t patronize me by calling me a little girl, because I’m not. My grades aren’t of your concern either. I am taking driver’s ed, Einstein but I can’t take it until I’m 16 soo… I’m learning to drive in a lot before I get my liscense so I know what I’m doing when I go get them. And a brat, I am not. Because I don’t want to learn in a small car does not make me a brat amd because my mother is getting someone to teach me does not make me a brat. And lastly, me mentioning my father is none of your concern. If he wasn’t mentioned in the question, there is absolutely no need to bring him up whatsoever. Since you can’t stay on topic, my father doesn’t live with me so his opinion means nothing. So get you head out of you *** and act like the big man you think you are!

It all depends on what you are going to drive later on. I learned to drive in a Ford Escort. Then went into the Army and started to drive A Semi-truck. And for the people saying that teenagers shouldn`t be driving SUV`S you guys need to quit I know of alot of people that started driving in a SUV. And probley better than you
