How long does it take to learn how to drive a car when being taught by an instructor?

I’m a 24 year old girl who, as embarrassed as I am to admit this, still doesn’t know how to drive. I don’t feel so bad because Brittany Murphy and Amber Benson (from Buffy the tv series) both didn’t learn until late too. I’m way younger than my siblings and by the time it was my turn to learn to drive, my parents wouldn’t teach me. So, I need to get my license to get a decent job and I need it fast as humanly possible, so how much time or how many lessons before I can pass my driving test? I just need to be able to get to and from a job, and I could still take lessons after I learn to drive, but I really need to do this asap. Any ideas?

Usually, a licensing area requires you to pass a written test first. After that, you can start getting lessons from a certified instructor. I don’t suggest rushing things because cars can be dangerous to yourself and to others. After around 16 hours with the instructor on the road, which is around 10 or 11 lessons, and a certain amount of time, you should be able to take a road test to get your full license (or a partially full license, depending on where you live). That’s from my own personal experience.
By the way, there are plenty of great jobs that don’t require driving. If you’re a beginning driver in a driving job, you are even more dangerous on the road than other beginners because you will be driving all the time, and you may learn lots of nasty habits. Try taking some college courses or doing some training for jobs that don’t require driving. Please be safe.
Honestly, youd be better off having a friend help you to learn how to drive. On the dmv test part, read the handout and answer the questions the way the dmv wants to hear them.
If you have had a couple of goes with a friend or relative, it really should only take you about 5-6 lessons,I was 25 before I got my licence,I bought the car first !
First you better study the written test and pass it, boom, if you can pass that they’ll give you a driving test, if you can pass the written, you can pass the driving. Allotted time 3 hours, max. time , all day.
OK I’m only 16 years old and taking drivers ed right now as a matter a fact my test was today as long as you know some of the signs and common rules you ll pass i got a 95 on the written part and 90 on signs. If you are above 18 years old you have a better opportunity you can get in a couple weeks after you pass the test i know because theres a 21 year old that took the test you have your permit to drive with a person with a D.L then you get it a couple of weeks later than waiting 6 months like i have to. Don’t feel bad at all…I’m a 26 yr old GUY in the same predicament. (Atleast men understand if you don’t drive. Women aren’t nearly as forgiving). I’ve just always taken the train, but in Virginia it’s not as easy.
Honestly, if you’ve paid attention to the drivers you’ve accompanied for the past 25yrs. Just try to grab a friend for a couple weekends and a few hours of safe “morning” drives and maybe a little early evening (almost dark, but not midnight) driving and parking. That should give you confidence. My only issue is … DMV won’t let me apply for a permit, I can’t afford to buy a car, and the last 5 driving schools I called said “Why don’t you just go take the test on your own?” :: sigh ::
If anyone lives in VA, I’ll give ya $50 for a driving lesson…$65 if you’re a cute female (ha). $75 if you’re cool.
Either way, say a prayer and let “Jesus take the wheel”…I’ll let ya know when I’ve got my license too.

It all depends on practice and the understanding of the laws of physics as it relates to starting stopping and turning. Please don’t feel bad. Being older then others is not embarrising it is good. You have a edge on young drivers in the fact that you have more experence in understanding the responsibility you are about to start. My hat is off to you. You are learning to drive because it is needed to go to work . You are not doing it to impress others. Safety is the most important thing you can do in learning to drive. Driving gives you a sence of power and that must be calmed with safety. It takes time and please remember that no matter what vehice you purchase it is only metal, rubber and plastic. You are made of precious material. Ask your mom or dad.
Driving school is good because u also get a discount on ur insurance..
and for the driving skool im going to its only 9 hours of driving with the instructor and the rest is class and then ur suppose to practice on ur own…
dont forget to take ur drug and alcohol test! u cant take the skool if u dont take that class!
learn to take the bus too if ur desperate…
